The first black and white Gestalt composition emphasizes radial continuation. The piece also emphasizes symmetry in order, however the piece is not completely aligned, and looks a bit uneven. The piece is classified as radial continuation because the pattern of circle is repeated multiple times, and it moves towards the center. Although there is a gap between each section of circles, the movement towards the center is still clear and visible. The composition could be a bit more interesting by layering other shapes on the circle to add visual interest. Numerous principles of design can be found within the piece. The first principle found is rhythm, where the same pattern occurs numerous times, one inside the other. Another principle used is movement, which goes in towards the center of the design.
The second black and white Gestalt composition is also continuation, however in this case, it moves across the page. The composition starts in the bottom right corner, and it moves to the upper left. Although there are small spaces and breaks in between the triangles, the movement across the page is still visible. The piece is visually interesting because the triangles are different shapes and sizes, and because they are not perfectly aligned, this adds interest to the piece. The triangles also bleed off the page, showing that the view may only be a small section of the whole piece. The main principles of design used in the piece are movement and rhythm. When the two principles come together, this gives the piece a sense of depth, as if the triangles are gong farther away. Another principle used in the piece is variety. The triangles are all different dimensions and sizes, however the triangles all come together to form a line.
The third black and white Gestalt composition is figure ground, because the black and the white (or positive and negative)alternate. The piece is interesting because it features two arrows, which both appear to be going into the other color. The arrows are balanced asymmetrically on the page, meaning that they are not exact, however the visual weight is still distributed evenly. To make this composition stronger, more shapes could be added along the edge of the half circle, however still allowing figure ground to be apparent. Another arrow, or more black space, could be added to reduce the amount of white space on the page. Although the main Gestalt principle used was figure ground, there also appears to be a bit of closure in the half circle. To emphasize the closure, black shapes could be placed where the rest of the circle would be. A principle of design used in the piece is variety, because numerous shapes and sizes are used to complete the piece. Another principle used is unity, because although there is a separation of color, the piece still seems to be a whole.
The final black and white Gestalt composition is closure. Closure is found in the circle at the center of the piece, and the triangle at the bottom right. The eye fills in the information that is not provided, which in this case, is the black around the circle. Only about fifty percent of the circles information is given (in the white), and the eye fills in the rest. Instead of only using basic shapes, lines are used to add interest. The piece is visually interesting because multiple different elements, including lines and different sized shapes, are used to create the piece. The triangle in the corner is a bit tilted, which adds interest to the piece as well.
