Simultaneous Color Contrast: Photoshop

Writer's picture: Anna KnaufAnna Knauf

The Simultaneous color contrast was created on photoshop by rotating initials, adding texture, and adding color. The image above is a complementary color scheme, which is orange and blue. The piece uses symmetry, which is mainly seen in the orange initials. The blue layer was then added, which is a cement wall with found objects, and the grey, which is a weaved basket. The piece is interesting because the textured layers are not similar to each other, and add detail to the composition. The blue layer is somewhat transparent, so the details from the other layers can be seen through. The orange initials look somewhat like a deer's antlers, and peak through the other layers. Although much of the orange is covered, the shape is still quite interesting. The piece could be improved by making the grey a bit transparent, allowing more to be seen through.

The composition above is split complementary. The initials are yellow-green, and the background is red. The purple texture is a flower, and the grey is the center of a different flower. Again, the piece used symmetry, which is seen in the initials. The grey appears to be bursting out of the center of the initials, and provides a unique pattern. The purple and grey patterns are similar, however the difference in color adds contrast to the composition. Although the purple is only at the top of the piece, it still seems to be balanced. To improve the piece, some of the layers could be more transparent, allowing different shapes to be seen through.
